On our first trip, we stayed off site. We were about 10 minutes from the Main Gate of Magic Kingdom.
We found a hotel, for a reasonable nightly rate. Since we only needed one night for our 2 day trip, this was extremely helpful in my budget.
Tip #2: If this is a short vacation or budget is tight, look off site. Most people in these situations only need a room for showering and sleeping, so staying on property or at a more expensive place shouldn't even bother you. Plus, many hotel/motels run a shuttle service, if you are without a car.
